ICON, 2021

𝐈𝐂𝐎𝐍 is a new play about Nico: supermodel, singer in Velvet Underground, songwriter and Factory icon known for the beauty she did her best to destroy.

The director has worked together with the ensemble to create a performance completely adapted for streaming but with the theater as its beating heart.

The text is a deconstruction of documentary material about Nico and reconstructions of interviews with people who lived in her vicinity as well as pure lies about her life. 𝐈𝐂𝐎𝐍 is not a biography but uses Nico as a mirror to explore feelings about identity, female artists, self-destruction and motherhood. Questions about identity creation and performativity are fundamental to the story: What does it mean to have power over your own brand? Can a persona create freedom from the vulnerability of the self? Or does the public's need to fix the self create unreasonable expectations of what it is to be human, what it is to be a woman?
